Peru’s Ministry of Production (Produce) has established this year’s catch quota for its giant squid (Dosidicus Gigas) resource at 420,000 tonnes, with the objective of guaranteeing a sustainable use of the species.
The new quota is down 16% on the 500,000 tonnes permitted in 2022.
According to ministerial resolution No. 000186-2023-PRODUCE, this catch quota may be modified based on the evolution of biological-fishing, environmental factors and the availability of the resource, following a report from the Peruvian Sea Institute, IMARPE.
Fishing effort must end either when the catch quota is reached, when IMARPE recommends it or on 31 December 2023.
Meanwhile, through ministerial resolution No. 000185-2023-PRODUCE, IMARPE has been authorised to carry out exploratory fishing for the red sea urchin resource.
Both resolutions were signed off by Minister of Production, Raúl Pérez Reyes.
