The Federation of Irish Fishermen (FIF), at its meeting yesterday, intensified its demands for Irish government and EU action in relation to the fuel crisis.

FIF has developed specific proposals including immediate temporary short-term tie-up aid which requires EU and government approval

The entire fleet will be in port from early Thursday to protest fuel prices and stagnant producer prices for fish. FIF will mount a protest at the Dail on Thursday. Significant further actions are planned for subsequent days.

The Irish protests mirror those ongoing in other EU countries. The Irish industry is working with EU colleagues as well as at a national level.

FIF says that it is imperative that the Irish government takes a lead in addressing these urgent issues, as the industry cannot survive the current situation otherwise.
