A North Sea herring fishery operated by the Danish Pelagic Producers Organisation (DPPO) has now entered Marine Stewardship Council reassessment, following its initial certification in 2009.

Certified fisheries under the MSC ecolabel scheme are reassessed every five years, and independent conformity assessment body MacAlister Elliott and Partners (MEP) will undertake this first reassessment of the Danish herring fishery, which operates both pelagic trawls and purse seines. The DPPO’s share of the Total Allowable Catch in 2013 was just over 83,000 tonnes.

Max Goulden of MEP said: “This is a very important fishery for Denmark and we are delighted to be taking part in its reassessment for the flagship MSC standard as a sustainable and well managed fishery.”
