Australia’s winter blue grenadier fishery has received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification.
“It is always encouraging to see industry take initiative around informing the community about the sustainability of their fishery. I commend Petuna Sealord Deepwater Fisheries for seeking to promote the excellent credentials of this fishery,” said Senator Richard Colbeck, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture.
“We know that Australia’s fisheries are among the most sustainable and best managed in the world – and this is an important message that we need to share with the broader community. This tick of sustainability provides consumers with increased confidence that they are supporting a sustainable fishery when they choose Australian blue grenadier.”
Senator Colbeck said the winter blue grenadier fishery underwent an 18 month independent assessment process to achieve the MSC certification, which is based on the core principles of healthy fish populations, reduced impact on marine ecosystems and effective management of the fishery.
Blue grenadier has a delicate white flesh and is wild caught, mostly from western Bass Strait and the west coast of Tasmania.
