At 2.30pm on Saturday 17 April, Barrows Tamar class lifeboat Grace Dixon was launched to go to the assistance of a fishing boat in Walney Channel.

The volunteer crew were scrambled when they received information that a 28ft motor fishing boat had become disabled due to gearbox trouble.

The spring tide was ebbing and the casualty was unable to make way, or manoeuvre properly. Although the vessel was only 400 yards from the shore, she still presented a hazard with the channel being used by other leisure and commercial craft.

A passing motor yacht circled the vessel to warn other vessels to keep clear, until the lifeboat reached the scene. A tow was quickly passed and the vessel was taken to a safe mooring near Jubillee Bridge, Walney.

The lifeboat was back on station at 3.40pm.
