Women farmers reap a bumper harvest of green mussels
Women farmers in Moothakunnam and Kottappuram, India, have reaped a large harvest of green mussels under the guidance of the ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
Kudumbashree units received a total yield of 2.5 tonnes from the farms: 1.5 tonnes from Moothakunnam and 1 tonne from Kottappuram.
Started in December last year, the farming was carried out under the guidance of CMFRI scientists.
After the harvest, the produce underwent depuration – to expel contaminants from the mussels’ gills and gut by providing them with purified seawater before they are consumed.
Depurated mussel meat from the farms is available for sale at CMFRI.
