Canadian cod and groundfish processing company, Icewater Seafoods, is investing in new equipment to help boost product yield and quality after receiving CAD$200,000 from the Provincial Government.
The funding, provided through the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Programme, will support the installation of Icelandic herring and mincing equipment, which it says is new to the fish processing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Helping industry players like Icewater Seafoods invest in leading technologies strengthens the company’s ability to compete effectively in markets throughout the world, and strengthens our cod sector,” said Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Icewater Seafoods says the new mincing technology will increase mince value while the new heading machine will increase product yield. By implementing these new technologies, Icewater hopes it will result in a better quality product for the competitive fresh/frozen market for cod.
The new equipment is expected to be fully integrated into the company’s processing line before the start of the 2015 cod fishing season.
