The Minister of Fisheries of the Faroe Islands, Johan Dahl, hosted the 16th North Atlantic Fisheries Ministers Conference in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands on 8 and 9 June 2011.
Ministers and their representatives reaffirmed the importance of agreed allocation schemes and management plans in order to ensure continued sustainability of shared stocks, noting experiences of over-exploitation of fish stocks in the absence of such agreements. Against this background, the interested Parties of the Northeast Atlantic expressed their commitment to reaching an early agreement on a fair and equitable allocation scheme for North-East Atlantic mackerel.
They also recalled the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002 and their commitment to achieve fishing at maximum sustainable yield (MSY) for all fish stocks by 2015.
