British tilapia, produced by The Fish Company on four fish farms across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, are now being sold in Tesco stores.

Tilapia is becoming increasingly popular with UK consumers, but this is the first time fresh British-farmed tilapia has been available in the country.
According to The Fish Company, British tilapia is farmed to the highest standards with complete traceability.
“There is a growing market for sustainably and ethically produced white fish, which we believe we can help fulfil,” said The Fish Company’s Hamish Bichan. “Our fish are 100% UK produced and are not hormone treated. The quality reared stock is fully traceable, GM free as well as sustainable.”
Bichan said that by using feed supplied by Skretting, the producer’s customers have the reassurance that the feed is backed by assurance reports that give full details of the raw materials used. “Best of all we always ensure that our tilapia is with our customers in 24-36 hours from harvest,” he said.
The Fish Company has built recirculation systems that help to ensure the welfare of the fish.
It is currently producing 700 tonnes of fish a year, which it supplies de-scaled and gutted.
