The popular Simrad SP90 fish finding sonar has been upgraded. A new software package offering new functionality is available from Simrad dealers around the world.

The new Tip function is a 180 degrees fan shaped horizontal beam with a vertical beam width of 9 degrees. This is similar to the to Bow up/180 Vertical mode on the Simrad SP70 sonar. This horizontal beam can be tipped from +10 to -60 degrees, and thereby cover an area from 90 degrees port to 90 degrees starboard in front of the vessel.

The SP90 sonar has a cylindrical transducer. For this reason there will be a blank spot under the vessel when the vertical fan is tipped from -70 down to -90 degrees. However, there will still be cover from 0 and down to -60 degrees on both sides of the vessel. In addition to the readout in the Tip menu button, the selected tip angle is shown with a dotted white line in the tilt indicator in the upper left corner.

Vertical beam width depends on the current frequency used. At 30kHz the vertical beam width in transmission as well as reception is 6.75 degrees, and at 20kHz is is 11 degrees.

The Simrad SP90 is Simrad’s most requested sonar for large trawlers and purse seiners. It is continuously proving itself in both the southern and northern hemispheres as a sophisticated solution providing the best underwater picture for many fish types. It has helped to improve catches of everything from tuna in the southern Atlantic to herring and mackerel in the North Sea.

Simrad SP90 is a low frequency omni directional sonar. It is specially designed for detection of weak and scattered targets such as tuna and mackerel.

The Simrad SP90 sonar offers short and long-range performance using advanced wide band transducer design combined with digital transmitting and receiver technology. The Simrad SP90 sonar also provides unique options such as 11 user-selectable operating frequencies from 20 to 30kHz and full circle beam stabilisation. Sequence recording with play back, picture memories, resizable windows, three target tracks and/or marks, off centre, zoom functions and dual range are all standard features.
