In a joint letter to the Norwegian government, Royal Greenland and seven other seafood companies and purchasers have stated their commitment to sourcing Barents Sea cod from well-managed fisheries and urged the Norwegian Fisheries Directorate to improve its official guidelines.

Royal Greenland says that it is committed to ensuring that its fish is sourced from well-managed fisheries around the world. The company says that it is of vital importance to be able to confirm the legality of the fish it buys, and its adherence to ‘blacklists’ thus requires that these are up to date and trustworthy. Unfortunately, it says, the current list of fishing vessels blacklisted by the Directorate is not up to date and seems to be lacking clarity.

In a joint letter to the Norwegian government the companies have requested that the current list is improved, or they have suggested that the creation of a ‘white list’ of vessels which are proven to operate legally may be a more comprehensive tool in the future.
