Grimsby fish suppliers of Cumbrian Seafood’s are now packing their fish into PPS East’s returnable plastic 15kg fish boxes.
These new boxes have been introduced into the supply chain to run alongside the current 25kg returnable boxes that have been in use for a number of years, lowering Cumbrian Seafood’s carbon footprint even further.
Grimsby fish suppliers have worked closely with Cumbrian Seafood’s to embrace modern technology and see this is as a big step towards reducing not only Cumbrian Seafood’s packaging waste, but also the cost for the supply of boxes.
Cumbrian Seafood’s Head Buyer, Chris Baird commented that, “We take waste and environment issues very seriously, and always look at how we can be more efficient as a company. We want our quality fish to be delivered to us in the best way possible, whilst ensuring its freshness is not affected. We have conducted many box trials into our sites, and have found that returnable boxes keep the fish at the optimum quality level whilst reducing waste.”
The PPS 15kg boxes are designed for today’s chilled supply chain and can provide a very safe and integrated handling system to support logistics, whilst contributing to preserving and protecting the freshness and quality of the catch.
These boxes are rented to Grimsby fish suppliers in order to transport their product to Cumbrian Seafood’s sites at Seaham and Whitehaven, where it is further processed for the multiple retailers. It is PPS East’s responsibility to retrieve them and have them hygienically cleaned at their box washing site in Grimsby before introducing back into the supply chain. The 15kg box is becoming a widely used box for many fish suppliers, and PPS East is excited about the prospect of rolling it out to many other Seafood companies in the UK and Europe.
