A Norwegian seafood company has opened its sixth factory across Spain and Portugal, its biggest so far in Spain.

Lerøy’s new 9,000 sqm facility in Madrid will create jobs for 160 people, adding to the 350 already employed across Spain. It will be used to both increase production capacity for current products as well as extend the company’s range.

“Processing fresh and frozen fish, smoking salmon and producing ready meals are some of the innovations that will create new business opportunities, and which will undoubtedly reinforce the company’s leading position in the seafood market in Spain and the whole Iberian Peninsula,” said Antonio Díez, managing director of Lerøy Processing Spain.

Spain is the largest importer of seafood in the EU and the factory joins existing facilities in Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Las Palmas, as well as in Lisbon in Portugal. New products in the pipeline include a new sushi, noodles, yakisoba, ramen, gyozas, cod and salmon burgers, poke bowls, fish-based ready meals, smoked salmon, frozen salmon and fresh salmon in consumer packaging.

The factory comprises three zones - one for ready meals such as sushi and other dishes, one for processing fresh and frozen fish, and one for smoking fish. Along with a head office, gym and showroom, the factory also includes a biological treatment plant designed to reduce environmental impact and a solar energy project is in development.
