The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is moving to a new web-based vessel monitoring system (VMS).

This new system will automatically link to AFMA databases, which contain licensing and other data. This will improve AFMA’s ability to monitor vessels in real time, enabling them to limit potential suspicious activities.
The VMS is based on a Fleet Information System and SmartTRAC. The system is a secure web-based application that allows AFMA to register and track ships, generate reports and manage permits and licenses.
The transition to this new system began in February 2013 and is expected to be completed in May 2013.
AFMA general manager operations Peter Venslovas said this is particularly good news for Commonwealth fishers.
“The new system is likely to realise cost savings for AFMA and those savings will be passed on to Commonwealth fishers through their levies”, Mr Venslovas said.
