Einar K Guðfinnsson (pictured) has been named the new Minister of Fisheries of Iceland after the appointment of former Minister Árni M. Mathiesen to Minister of Finances last month.
The new Minister has a wealth of experience in the fishing area. Guðfinnsson was the Chairman of Fisheries Committee between 1999-2003 and manager director of a former fishing company in the North West of the country.
He told World Fishing that Iceland's main quota system, the Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs) will remain the basis of his policy. Guðfinnsson confessed that he is a 'fierce opponent' of Iceland becoming a member of the EU. "We are a successful, prosperous nation. One of the reasons is because we are outside the EU".
