Lindgren-Pitman, Inc., the world''s most innovative manufacturer of commercial longline equipment, has introduced the revolutionary new Super Spool III series of midwater longlining spools. The 40-inch Super Spool III, first in the series boasting Lindgren-Pitman''s new patented technology, has a 22-inch core, almost 40% larger than the current system, and more than 80% larger than most of the competition.
Company President, Peter Lindgren, said: "When a few of our large boat clients told us they were replacing their line every 4 to 6 months because of excess breakage when hauling, we knew something was wrong. Although we know our monofilament will outlast our competitors' [monofilament] significantly, both theirs and ours was breaking more often than it should. We knew that our monofilament line should last for years, not months."
Extensive in-house laboratory testing data gathered by Lindgren-Pitman technicians over several months revealed that the deterioration was caused by excessive extended loads on the bottom 2 inches of the stack. By increasing the core size and reducing stack depth, the load was reduced by 40%!
The new Super Spool III series resolves two common causes of monofilament failure --- excess compression load under high tension on the bottom layers of deeply stacked spools and strength reducing deformation of the line by the welds joining core and end plates. The large core eradicates excess compression loads caused by deep stacking. End plates and cores are joined with innovative, patent-pending technology that eliminates the welds.
The 40-inch Super Spool III holds 55 miles of 3.6mm monofilament (a 10% increase over earlier systems) and provides smoother hauling and setting on the lower portion of the stack. The large 22-inch core requires lower spool revolutions per minute and lowers hydraulic flow requirements.
The Generation III reels are also available from Lindgren-Pitman in four sizes, 40 x 48, 40 x 60, 40 x 80 and 48 x 80. "With this selection we can accommodate virtually any need. The 48 x 80 Generation III with a capacity of 70 nautical miles of 3.6mm monofilament is an ideal choice for owners stepping up to vessels in the 90-foot plus category. "Many of our current overseas projects involve large vessels and the 48 x 80 affords us a unique advantage in filling this niche," reports Tony Costa, foreign sales manager for Pacific Ocean Producers. A radial piston motor with a 20 cubic inch displacement powers the 48 x 80 reel.
