Iceland’s Stofnfiskur salmon broodstock farm is running on high after coating its centrifugal pumps with an epoxy coating system to improve pump efficiency.

Developed by UK-based Belzona, the Belzona 1341 coating has smooth, self-levelling and hydrophobic properties to eliminate corrosion and decelerate erosion.

As part of a preventative maintenance programme, Stofnfiskur internally coated its pumps 15 years ago. The company says this has led to reduced power consumption and operating and maintenance costs.

A spokesperson for Belzona told World Fishing and Aquaculture: “The coating is brush applied as a two coat system with no specialist tools and cures at ambient temperature. Energy efficiency is achieved by the means of reduced turbulence and surface friction.”

“We have a very varied offering consisting of polymeric repair composites and industrial protective coatings. We aim to simplify industrial maintenance and specialise in long-term solutions that are safe and easy to apply,” they added.

Stofnfiskur’ facility houses 25,000m³ tanks in 10 sheds used for the breeding of salmon and production of salmon ova. Each tank holds tens of thousands of litres of water constantly recycled and pumped back out.
