The AS do MAR brand of tuna and mackerel has been one of the first in Italy to be certified Friend of the Sea since 2006.
At the heart of Generale Conserve’s company strategy is social responsibility. Ethical decisions are proactively taken and sustainability is of utmost importance.
Generale Conserve has recently moved all of its AS do MAR tuna production to a site to Olbia, Italy. The factory has also been certified as using 100% green energy and only uses energy from renewable sources. Both the production and sales units of General Conserve are certified SA8000 for their high labour and social accountability standards.
General Conserve creates employment for over 500 people in its tuna factory in Italy and mackerel factory in Portugal. It is one of the few companies in Italy where the tuna arrives whole to Olbia, meaning Generale Conserve has full control of the tuna species and size before it is processed.
Executive Director of Friend of the Sea, Paolo Bray adds, “Companies should follow Generale Conserve’s example and realise the importance of social responsibility. Sustainability should be interpreted as conservation of resources whilst respecting social accountability.”
