Westfalia Separator offers a safe haven for fishing vessels and small ferry operators, vulnerable to increases and fluctuations in diesel oil prices, looking to cut costs by changing from diesel oil to less expansive heavy fuel oil.

Whilst previously such a change may not have been considered worthwhile, it may now be viewed as a positive way to stabilise costs for some operators. Whilst renewable bio-fuels may offer a solution for the future, this alternative is not a practical reality for most operators yet, leaving some operators as the mercy of diesel cost increases.

Westfalia Separator heavy fuel oil treatment systems have, for a number of years, been installed with commercial success in a number of vessels, to process heavy fuel oil for engine combustion thus providing an alternative to diesel fuel oil. With many modern marine engines already able to burn HFO, the switch for some operators can be relatively straight forward.

Based on centrifugal separation the Westfalia Separator treatment system removes water, salt and solids from the heavy fuel oil before passing clean fuel through to the fuel feeding system.

A booster unit conditions the HFO between storage tank and injection system of the engine to the required viscosity and temperature for ignition.
