Icelandic boatbuilder Trefjar has delivered a new Cleopatra 50 to brothers Ørjan and Ketil Sandnes from Leknes in Norway.
The 15 metre Nygrunn replaces a wooden-hulled boat that three generations of the Sandnes family had worked since 1971.
Nygrunn is serious advance in technology over the older boat, with a gyroscopic Tohmei ARG250 anti-rolling stabiliser that minimises vessel movement in any kind of a seaway, providing a steady working platform that results in better handling of both catches and fishing gear.
Nygrunn is built for netting, laid out on similar lines to the Cleopatra 50s that Trefjar has delivered for longlining, with a full shelterdeck and a hauling position on the starboard side for the Lorentz Hydraulikk nethauler. Stálorka supplied additional deck equipment.
The layout places the fishroom amidships and this has capacity for 43 x 460 litre tubs. Accommodation of forward, with bunks for six in three cabins, plus a fully-equipped galley. The crew’s facilities are designed so that Nygrunn can work longer trips or can work comfortably away from home for extended periods, if required.
The mess area is located on the port side of the wheelhouse, opposite the skipper’s control position on the starboard side facing the bank of screens displaying data from the JRC, Simrad and Olex electronics.
The Quick bow and stern thrusters are linked to the autopilot to activate automatically, keeping the boat on a steady heading when manoeuvring to haul gear at slow speeds.
The main engine is an 800hp Doosan 4V222 located in the aft engine space and powering a free-standing ZF 665 reduction gear. There are also two Scam gensets on board to supply the Nygrunn's electrical power requirements.
