Trawl gear to save on fuel
Hampidjan has introduced some new trawl products, aimed at lowering fuel costs, including Dynex warps, made from Dyneema to replace steel wire. It says the new rope is much lighter and Dynex warp 36mm weighs 0.7 kg/m in air compared to 6.0 kg/m for steel wire. For 2×1,800 m the weight is 2.5 tonnes compared to 21.6 tonnes for steel wire.
As the density of the Dynex is low, the warp is light and it floats, giving a major advantage when fishing close to surface, Hampidjan said. Less weight means easier towing and rewinding power and so better fuel consumption.
Hampidjan also showed at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition the Gloria Hiflow and a full size model of its revolutionary new trawl door Opex (www.worldfishing.net/810). Halldor Egill Gudnason of Hampidjan said there was a huge interest in the doors during the exhibition and they had already sold three doors to Icelandic company Grandi with the possibility they might buy another three.
