The global aquaculture industry continues to be the fastest growing animal-food-producing sector, accounting for around half of all fish consumed in the world today. The two-day Offshore Mariculture Asia Conference culminated with the choice of two local technical visits.
Option 1:
Hatchery visit – Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore – Marine Aquaculture Centre
The AVA works to ensure a resilient supply of safe food for Singapore. They have implemented strategies and programmes to maintain an adequate and stable supply of food, while mitigating food safety risks. While diversifying our overseas food supply, we also seek to enhance the productivity of local farms through R&D and capability development.
Located at St John’s Island, the Marine Aquaculture Centre (MAC) was set up to develop and harness technology to facilitate the development and expansion of large-scale hatchery and fish farming production in Singapore and the region.
To get there, our group will take a 30-minute ferry ride from Marina South Pier. We will be taking a coach from the Marina Mandarin on 17th May to Marina South Pier.
The schedule will be as follows:
0930H Depart Marina South Pier to St John’s Island
1000H Arrive St. John’s Island jetty and walk to Marine Aquaculture Centre
1015H Start tour of Marine Aquaculture Centre
1145H Walk to St John’s Island jetty
1200H Depart St John’s Island for Marina South Pier
1230H Reach Marina South Pier
Important Information:
– Attendees should bring some form of ID just in case the Customs officers need to conduct some checks. (Visitors go through the domestic channels at the Marina South Pier and there will be some security checks.)
– As there will be a 10-15min walk to Marine Aquaculture Centre from St John’s Island Jetty with part of the walk on an uphill slope, we advise visitors to wear light attire, comfortable footwear, and to bring along only their necessities. Visitors are also advised to bring an umbrella/poncho in case it rains as there is no shelter between the Marine Aquaculture Centre and St John’s Island Jetty.
Option 2:
Farm Visit – Barramundi Asia
Barramundi Asia Pte Ltd (BAPL) is one of the largest companies in the world farming Barramundi in the ocean and draws on world-class sustainable fish farming practices and aquaculture technology. Granted the only two fish farming licenses in the Southern waters of Singapore, BAPL is the largest fish farm in Singapore by biomass. The Company focuses on the full value chain (“Farm-to-Fork”) from the hatchery, nursery, sea cage farm, processing to marketing with its own registered brand Kühlbarra (B2C and B2B) which allows it to capture the full premium value. BAPL’s vision is to become the world’s largest supplier of fresh sustainable Barramundi. BAPL has also developed and wholly owns a vaccines business and production lab, Uvaxx Pte Ltd, which develops and supplies proprietary autogenous vaccines for its own and third-party farm operations.
This visit will provide conference attendees with the chance to put their learning into practice at an operating farm. Participants will benefit from a guided tour of the facility and will have the chance to ask the owner questions about the daily operations of the farm, technologies and processes. Lunch will also be provided at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, RSYC, at the West coast ferry terminal road.

Important Information:
– Attendees should bring their passports as they will need to go through immigration. Without your passport, you will not be able to visit the farm.
– Comfortable clothes and non slip shoes are advised.
– The lunch will be fish (kuhlbarra) and seafood fried rice. For people with dietary restrictions or desires, please provide advance notice.
