Last week saw the screening of a new film from Seafish, ‘The Business of Fishing’, which aims to improve people’s understanding of the UK fishing industry.

The film, which features four vessel owners, looks at the complexities of operating within the modern UK fishing industry. All vessel owners say they remain optimistic about the future of fishing and recognise the importance of managing their own stocks well.
Hazel Curtis, chief economist, Seafish said: “The film gave a fascinating perspective on their experiences of running a business in our fishing industry and the fishermen who took part welcomed the opportunity to tell their stories.”
The screening took place at an event in London on 12 March 2013, after which environmental NGOs, industry experts and Westminster College delegates took part in a discussion. Seafish says an interest was expressed in finding out more about the issues raised, with several organisations requesting presentations of the film to consider the issues in more detail.
The film will be screened in Edinburgh this week on 20 March 2013. Following the screening, Scottish Fisheries Cabinet Secretary, Richard Lochhead MSP, will give a brief talk about recent innovations in the Scottish fleet and the future of both fleets and stocks.
