The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova, have announced how federal funding will be used to improve small craft harbours in Dennis Point, Abbotts Harbour and Lower East Pubnico.

“Our Government is working to create jobs and strengthen the long-term economy of coastal communities,” said Minister Shea. “Through projects like this, we are delivering on the commitments we have made through Canada’s Economic Action Plan.”

A $2.3m investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan and $800,000 in regular program funding will fund a major harbour development project and dredging at Dennis Point. Work is already underway. A contract has been awarded to Tri-County Construction of Yarmouth to extend two wharfs. Dredging will be carried out by McNally Construction Ltd.

The small craft harbour in Lower East Pubnico will undergo a $3.9m development project, including wharf construction, new floats, dredging and building a service area. Work is getting underway with the award of a contract to R.J. MacIsaac Construction Ltd., to build a new pile wharf and a new marginal wharf.

“Improving these harbours will stimulate the local economy,” said MP Kerr. “Our Government’s Economic Action Plan will help to ensure that these harbours are given the enhancements needed to support our community’s commercial fishery for years to come.”
