The Grimsby based company PPS East recently secured a new contract to provide returnable plastic fish crates to Belgian company Levenstond Seafood, a supplier of Scottish salmon to Belgian supermarkets.

This contract represents a major breakthrough for PPS in an overseas market for returnable plastic boxes, where previously salmon had been transported in single-use expanded polystyrene (EPS) boxes, which then had to be disposed of.
Following a recent report carried out by the Humber Seafood Institute commissioned on behalf of PPS, comparing the carbon footprints of one way trip EPS boxes and PPS returnable plastic fish boxes, the results were remarkable. It reported an 89% improvement using PPS boxes as opposed the EPS boxes and contributed to significant cost savings.
PPS East recently relocated into new premises and invested in state-of-the-art industrial wash lines. This is where the used plastic fish crates from Levenstond Seafood are washed, prior to being returned to Levenstond’s salmon supplier in Scotland.
PPS Director Iain McArthur said, “The core business of PPS involves the management of returnable transit equipment (RTE) – such as plastic crates and boxes, plastic pallets, bins or pallet boxes. We rent such equipment to clients, manage it in the field or at third parties, collect used equipment and wash it to the highest standard (ISO 22000) at either site in Grimsby or Measham in the Midlands, before returning it to the equipment pool”.
