The beginning of March saw the biggest trawl landings in the history of the Beta company from Runavik, Faroes.
Never before has so much fish been landed in two days than on the 3 and 4 March. Long liners have also had very good haddock and average cod catches.
Pair trawlers "Polarhav" and "Stjarnan" landed 920 boxes @ 300kg = 270 tons; "Heykur" and "Falkur" had 285 tons; and "Bakur" and Stelkur (the first Spanish-built pair) had 240 tons.
This equals nearly 800 tons from three pairs of trawlers, after less than one week's trip. In addition, on 6 March 6, "Lerkur" and "Hrokur" landed 200 tons after 5-6 days at sea.
These catches were composed mostly of saithe (80%), cod and haddock, and taken on grounds continually trawled for 25 years.
The Faroese fisheries are managed by effort control through a days at sea system, as against output control management by TAC's and individual quotas.
