Over 50 organisations, businesses and fishermen from Canada and the US have submitted a joint letter to the Canadian General Standards Board opposing proposed draft Organic Standards for Finfish Aquaculture.
In order to protect consumers from weak foreign certifications, Canada and the US currently have an equivalency agreement for organic standards. Weak Canadian aquaculture standards may put downward pressure on US standards as they go through the final approval process with the US Department of Agriculture.
