The system, delivered by Marel with Danish company Hillerslev, weighs fish as it comes ashore and the methodology is similar to systems already in use in Norway, Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

"This weighing system will make this the only pelagic processing plant in the country that weighs entire landings before production, as most plants rely on product weight," said Jón Már Jónsson, manager of Síldarvinnslan's shore-based production, and adding that this is a significant installation and this is an ISK 100 million investment.

"This is very sophisticated equipment and we have every faith that it will work perfectly. This system makes it possible to pump fish ashore with more water than would otherwise be possible, and that reduces pressure on the fish during the pumping process so that this is a gentler process."

Jón Már Jónsson commented that this is expected to result in better product quality. Good progress is being made on the installation and the system is expected to be operational when the mackerel season opens at the end of June or in early July.
