Marine Harvest Scotland has inked up a successful second quarter in 2013 – no doubt helped by the boom its experiencing from Scottish salmon exports to China.

The company says that export agreements between China and Scotland have opened up the borders for Scottish salmon sales which could reach as high as £25m.

Marine Harvest is the largest salmon farming company in Scotland and a major exporter with a strong track record of developing new markets. Prior to the company breaking into the market in 2012 there were no direct sales to China from the Scottish farmed salmon industry.

In January 2011 the company achieved sales in excess of £9m for its first year of export to China. The total value of sales to China in 2012 was £11m.

For 2013 and beyond it’s aiming for year on year growth in the region of 20%.

The company’s tonnage is set to increase to circa 60,000 tonnes per annum in the next four years as it develops new salmon farms in the Minch. In addition to China it’s also supplying to South Korea and Taiwan which also have huge potential as export markets.

Marine Harvest Scotland recently won a Scottish aquaculture award for business development - largely due to its success with exports in China.
