New automatic grading system

Skaginn hf. have installed a new, combined system for weighing and packing. The system is fast, accurate and automatic. The weighing system is based on Skaginn patent pending technology. Skaginn has been using this technique for weighing fish products such as pelagic fish and scallops. This weighing system is integrated with the automatic packing machine where the product is packed into bags made out of plastic foil. The system saves packing cost and manpower.

Technical information

The weighing is done in two steps. A hopper is filled up by two product streams, the main stream and the fine coarse. When lower weight limit is reached, the main stream stops and a small hopper come onto the top of the main hopper. The fine course is fed to this small hopper for fine tuning the weight. If the small batch is out of limit it is rejected fromproduct stream and a new one is weighed up. Most of the small batches are inside limit and are fed to the main hopper. In that way a fast and accurate weighing is achieved. After the first installation of three systems in a new plant in Norway this system won the highest grade, X1, for accuracy and speed. The weighing and packing is done automatically and only one person is needed to add foils and control the machines. The cost of the foil compared to the cost of ready made bags is around 70%. Operated costs are reduced by up to 75%, depending on the number of packing machine.

The accuracy of the system minimises the give away and so increases the yield of the product.

Additional systems

Skaginn offers various solutions for further processing after packing into plastic. For freezing the product Skaginn offers new technique with combined contact and blast freezing, both for block and IQF. Skaginn also offers systems for plate freezing and fresh-fish packing. These systems can be automatic and manual. The palletising system from Skaginn is very effective and is part of the packing and logistics system and can be connected to different packing lines.
