A remarkable example of the 100% Fish For Profit vision made real is contained in the story of Local Ocean, a restaurant in Newport, Oregon, which has fully embraced the full utilisation fisheries mission.
Local Ocean’s journey will be explored on the opening day of the 100% Fish For Profit Conference later this month, when founder Laura Anderson and Business Innovation Specialist Darlene Khalafi share details in the Blueprints For Success session.
First opened in 2005 by Anderson and fisherman Al Pazar, Local Ocean was ‘a fish market with a little restaurant attached’ before developing and expanding to become one of the founding businesses of the Oregon Ocean Cluster in 2024, since when it has been an outsized contributor to the movement dedicated to enhancing the blue economy in the Oregon region.
Khalafi is a marine ecologist and sustainability professional whose work for Local Ocean was last year selected for a competitive program launching novel seafood products and commercialization strategies for underutilized fisheries, securing over $100k in support for Local Ocean’s 100% Fish work to date.
The inspiring Local Ocean duo will be joined in the session exploring transferable full utilisation strategies by contributors from the Great Lakes Cluster, the Royal Greenland fishing company, and the Netherlands’ world-leading Wageningen University & Research.
