In Ireland it now accounts for about 30% of fish processed and represents 31% of the total value of the fishery production in the EU.
Speaking recently to World Fishing Frank Fahey said: “There is no doubt it is the future of the global fishing industry. I believe that new opportunities will also emerge in the medium term beyond the traditional species currently being farmed.”
All around the globe as well as Ireland, significant progress is being made in the farming of new species such as cod and turbot, and Minister Fahey says ‘it is only a matter of time’ before economic and technical conditions will be right to enable commercial farming to be undertaken on a larger scale in this area.
He also called for more research to be done on deep sea fishing as quotas are cut in coastal areas.
