Officials said a fall crab fishery could put next year’s catch at risk.
The crab that is in the water now is the crab that’s available for next season as premium crab, said DFO official Tony Blanchard.
Blanchard said fishermen are right to be worried about the scarcity of crab this year compared to past years.
He said the Fisheries Department will be monitoring crab stocks closely.
The crab fishing season usually opens during spring and early summer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
