The longlining fleet continues to have a pivotal role for the Spanish region of Galicia, and vessels fish the North and South Atlantic as well as Gran Sol fishing grounds.
First new vessel off the slipway will be a freezer, Xiada Dous, due in May/June for fishing swordfish and shark in the South Atlantic. Generoso Tercero is due in October and it will be fishing for swordfish and shark in the North Atlantic, to be joined in November by Vicmar Uno. A bottom lonngliner. Nuevo Santillana, for fishing in Gran Sol, will be delivered in March 2005.
The new vessels follow a series of longliners from Cies in the last few years, including Novo Airiños, a 50-metre factory freezer, as reported in World Fishing December 2003.
