The first FleetBroadband 150 terminal in Peru has been deployed onboard an anchovy fishing vessel.

The 58m Maria Pia has a crew of 20 who can now benefit from the newest Inmarsat maritime broadband service.

The Maria Pia's operators, the Austral Group, took the decision to upgrade from Inmarsat Fleet 33 because of the increasingly large data files that the vessel was sending and receiving.

The need to transmit e-log books and records quickly is answered by the fast speeds FB150 is able to offer - delivering voice and IP data up to 150 kbps.

FB150 is designed for small- to medium-sized fishing vessels with relatively low data rate requirements but which still require reliability and global accessibility.

Peru is one of the world's largest producers by volume of fish and fish-derived products, and fishing is the country's second biggest industry, making it an ideal market for FB150.

Pedro Saavedra, chief executive officer at Peruvian service provider TE.SA.M Perú who supplied the vessel with a Thrane & Thrane terminal and airtime from Stratos, said: "TE.SA.M is proud to have made the first sale of FleetBroadband in Peru.

"We are pleased to see that the growth of the Peruvian economy - and especially the fishing industry - is paving the way for new communication technologies. We are confident that more companies will follow as they realise the benefits of an onboard communication system at an affordable price."
