A recent study has highlighted the accuracy of artisanal fishers’ local ecological knowledge in mapping marine habitats, revealing that their insights can match satellite data in quality
Published in Ocean and Coastal Management, the research by the University of Plymouth and the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation focused on five Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea and explored the potential of LEK to produce reliable habitat maps.
Fishermen were able to locate seagrass beds with up to 92% accuracy.
