The two 80 metre Luntos trawlers are built to a Vard 8 04 design at the Vung Tau yard. Carsoe is supplying the factory decks for both, with the complete setup for each trawler fabricated at its facilities in Aalborg and shipped to Vietnam for installation.

“The factory was sold back in December 2019. Since then, the project has been designed, produced and is now being installed,” said Carsoe’s area sales manager, Thomas Andreasen.

“It’s all tailor-made, as are all of our systems. There are standard items of equipment, but everything that links the elements together is ours. The project has required the expertise of several different departments at Carsoe, who are all working together to provide the best possible solution for our client,” he said, adding that in this instance, Carsoe is not carrying out the installation itself, as this is being done by the yard.

“Everything is designed in 3D and the yard has the ship’s whole design in 3D, which simplifies the process a lot. The 3D design also means that if it fits on the layout, then it’s also going to fit in reality.”

He commented that a Carsoe supervision team is continuously monitoring the factory installation on site in Vietnam.

“Our technical project manager, Troels Poulsen, has throughout the whole process kept in close contact with both the client and the relevant internal departments. He has mentioned how pleased he has been with the collaboration between Carsoe and Luntos.”

The first trawler is expected to sail from the yard shortly. The second, with a Carsoe factory that isn’t identical to the first trawler’s catch handling layout, is scheduled to be complete in mid-2022.

Luntos has a production capacity of 180 tonnes per 24 hours, and the factory deck is designed to handle herring, mackerel and iwasi sardine, as well as having a production layout for squid during the season. The squid line is largely manual processing, with the catch sorted and processed before being frozen.

The particular processing layouts for herring, mackerel and sardine are designed for the specific requirements for those species, with a roller grader to separate catches automatically into grades. Those fish routed for fillet production are streamed to the pair of Baader 221 filleting machines, plus there are processing routes for producing wholefrozen fish as required.

Everything is frozen in the bank of 16 vertical plate freezers, before products are automatically placed in bags or master boxes, weighed, labelled, and sent for manual packing on pallets.

For the second trawler, Luntos and Carsoe developed a factory deck with some differences, this time with the customer opting for three VMK filleting machines, and with 21 vertical plate freezers to provide a larger throughput capacity.
