Cabo Verde is committed to promoting, defending and complying with the principles and standards of FiTI and to ensuring that the country's policy in sustainable exploitation, rational management, participatory governance and transparency in the exploitation of fishing resources is fully aligned with the objectives and principles of FiTI.

“It is a complex challenge for Cape Verde to ensure that fishing and fish trade contribute to the income, decent employment, food and nutrition of our people, while maintaining marine biodiversity for future generations,” said the Minister of Maritime Economy, Dr Paulo Lima Veiga.

“We are therefore starting the processing of becoming a FiTI candidate country immediately,” he added.

The Government of Cabo Verde believes that fishing has a great economic, social, cultural, recreational and leisure importance for the country and is keen to realise this potential by creating an access scheme to fisheries resources.

However, the government is also aware that these resources have been exploited beyond sustainable levels and has put in place measure to mitigate this including the development of a fisheries management system, fisheries administration and monitoring system.

An executive plan for fishing resources is also being created aimed at promoting greater transparency and efficiency in the operation and permanent monitoring of landings together with a basic fisheries law setting the general principles on sustainable use of fisheries resources
