The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, has announced the appointment of Faith Scattolon as a Canadian Commissioner to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
"I am pleased that Ms Scattalon has accepted to represent Canada as a Commissioner to ICCAT," said Minister Shea. "Canada will be well-served by her experience and her extensive knowledge of Atlantic fisheries, especially the swordfish and bluefin tuna fisheries."
ICCAT is a regional fisheries management organisation responsible for the management of tuna, swordfish and other related large pelagics in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. There are currently 48 Contracting Parties to ICCAT that range from North, South and Central America to Europe and Africa, as well as distant water fishing nations in Asia. Canada has been a member of the organisation since it was established in 1969.
Faith Scattolon is currently Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Director General, Maritimes Region, a region which accounts for more than 90% of Canada’s swordfish landings and close to 50% of its bluefin landings. She has a Bachelor of Science (Biology) from Dalhousie University. She has served the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in various key roles for 25 years, including the last 12 as an executive.
