The new vessel, the CCGS S Dudka, has been named after a war veteran and distinguished federal fishery officer, Stan Dudka, who died in 2008.

Minister Ashfield said: “It is with great humility that we name this vessel for the late Stan Dudka, a man who dedicated his life to service to his country.”

Canadian manufacturer, ABCO Industries Limited, is currently constructing the new vessel at its boatyard in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. ABCO was awarded the US$2.9m contract to build the 14m CCGS S Dudka for the Canadian Coast Guard.

The vessel will feature jet propulsion and will be used for the most part, for fisheries enforcement duties and will be based in Alberton, Prince Edward Island. It is expected to be delivered in 2012.

More investments are to be made to the Canadian Coast Guard’s fleet of vessels and helicopters as part of the Economic Action Plan 2012. More than US$1.4bn has already been invested for new mid-shore patrol vessels, scientific research vessels, a new hovercraft and Canada’s first polar icebreaker.
