Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has issued a video statement on his legislation (HB 111, SB 108) to increase Alaska’s food production and security by permitting finfish farming in Alaska.
Dunleavy stressed the new legislation that he put forward only allows permitting for the cultivation and sale of certain finfish in inland, closed bodies of water and that salmon farming will remain illegal.
According to the legislation, cultivating pink, chum, sockeye, coho, chinook and Atlantic salmon is prohibited and all finfish acquired with a finfish farm permit will need to be sterilised triploids which are unable to reproduce.
It also requires finfish farms to be enclosed within a natural or artificial escape proof barrier.
