Admiral Makarov, a Russian icebreaker has arrived to help ships frozen in the ice in Sakhalin Bay, in the Okhotsk Sea.
Onboard the stranded ships, including research vessel Professor Kizivetter, reefer Coast of Hope and floating platform Commonwealth, are approximately 500 people.
At 135m long, Admiral Makarov is one of the largest Far Eastern icebreakers. It has enough fuel and food for 75 days.
Magadan,a small icebreaker, had spent two days trying to get to the three ships but was unsuccessful.
