Síminn formally opened its groundbreaking network of long-range 3G transmitters along Iceland''s coastline at its exhibition-area at the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition.
The new system will allow seafarers excellent 3G cell-phone coverage around the coast.
"The 3G net will allow all seafarers to use their regular 3G cell phones at sea as they would on land. As an added bonus, they can also access the internet via a 3G network card, so they can connect to the Internet at high speed through Síminn's 3G long-range network. This is a tremendous improvement on life at sea, whether it be personally or professionally. Now seamen can be in touch with their families at home, through either regular calls or video-calls, not to mention accessing the internet, for example, to pay bills, listen to the radio or seek amusement or information. Being able to easily contact the on-shore fishing company is also an added value. This means that there is no more isolation while working at sea." says Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, CEO of Síminn.
The long-range 3G network will cover the entire coastline surrounding Iceland, replacing the old NMT system. "While the NMT network system has proven itself to be a necessary security device throughout the years, it is now seriously out-dated and is no longer being manufactured. With the NMT system you had to make your phone-call on a specific location onboard, while you can talk on the phone wherever you please with the 3G network. The long-range 3G system will therefore not only replace the NMT, but it will also be a considerable improvement on the old system," says Mr Freyr and emphasises that the NMT system will not be shut down until the new system is fully running, with ample time to allow Síminn's customers to adjust to the transition.
