Iceland’s Eimskip, a subsidiary of the Avion Group, has entered into shipbuilding contracts for the construction of two highly sophisticated reefer vessels for a total purchase price of approximately NOK 258 million (3,120 million ISK).
The investment is intended to support the company’s strategy to be a supplier of quality services in the North Atlantic. This is a part of a renewal for the fleet and will enable Eimskip to carry out logistics operations in an even more efficient and secure way.
With this new fleet structure, Eimskip will be able to enter into more diversified transportation services, carrying temperature controlled commodities such as seafood products, meat, vegetables, fruits etc. worldwide.
The new ships will contribute to the extensive transport network in the North Atlantic Ocean of Eimskip and Eimskip-CTG, its subsidiary in Norway.
Eimskip-CTG specialises in the transport and storage of frozen and chilled seafood in the North-Atlantic and with its extensive service network it enables Eimskip-CTG to offer the seafood industry comprehensive service, from landing and storage of marine products to transport of these products to the final purchaser, together with related services.
The company received one reefer vessel last year and will, within the next 12 months, receive three vessels ordered in 2004 and 2005. There are therefore a total of six reefer vessels ordered for Eimskip since the end of 2005.
New contracts to Kleven Maritime
The latest vessels will be built at Myklebust Verft AS in Norway, part of the Kleven pmaritime, and delivered in July and November 2007 respectively.
The ships will be owned by Eimskip and operated by Eimskip-CTG. ”We are happy that Eimskip again selected our yard as supplier for its vessels” says Per Kristian Furø, Managing Director of Myklebust Verft.
The new 2,500 tonne deadweight vessels will have a length of 80m with a beam of 16m and a maximum draught of 6m. The hull will be built to ice class standard to enable operations in the North Atlantic.
The new vessels will have installed machinery of 3,000 kW output delivering a service speed of 16 knots. A feature of the design is substantial loading and discharging capacity of about 200 tonnes per hour and a total of 14 45ft containers can be loaded on the deck.
The vessels have been developed in close co-operation with the owner, the charterer and the designer, Multi Maritime and are the latest version of the latter’s MM 80 Reefer design.
Multi Maritime AS is a privately owned company, established in 1983 and located in Førde in western Norway. Throughout its history it has offered professional – and confidential – consultancy services to shipowners and shipyards at home and abroad.
