The growing trend for hull building in Poland continues with two new pairtrawlers for Faroes home port Leirvik which have been fitted out by Faroes company Vónin Ltd., based in Fuglafjørdur .
The 'Stjørnan' and 'Polarhav', were towed from Poland for fitting out, the 'Stjørnan' at Hafnarfjørdur and the 'Polarhav' at Akranes.
The new trawlers are 36,5 metres long and have a beam of 8,5 metres.
The main engine is 1,000 hp and each boat costs approximately 29m DK (3.9m).
Dedicated for pairtrawling, Vónin says that 'for ground fishing we have supplied them with two 630 mesh 'Bacalao' trawls and two 720 mesh Bacalao trawls with two sets of 21' rockhopper gear. There are two codends with intermediaries.
For the silversmelt fisheries they supplied two 352 metre 'Super Height' trawls. In addition and 2 x 1,000, 26 mm EuroPact trawl wire rope.
They can fish for saith and also catch silversmelt in the summer season.
Stretching the record?
Another interesting titbit from the Faroes is that after being 'stretched' by seven metres, the pelagic trawler 'Krúnborg' of Tórshavn, skippered by Pauli Wang, arrived at Fuglafjørd at the end of last year fully loaded with blue whiting after only a few days fishing in west of Ireland EU-waters.
Before she was stretched she could carry 2,500 tonnes.
After 30 hours unloading she had landed 3.193 tonnes of blue whiting.
This is the largest single load of blue whiting ever landed at Havsbrún and perhaps the largest landing ever in the North Atlantic.
