The UK shellfish industry prepares to gather at the 44th Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) Conference, taking place at Fishmongers’ Hall in London on 21 and 22 May 2013.

The event, which will be attended by around 150 fishermen, cultivators, regulators and environmental organisations, will provide the industry with an opportunity to reflect on progress made over the last year.
The SAGB says it’s vital that the industry comes together at a time when the industry is facing increasing legislation and financial constraints to establish priorities for the year ahead.
Topics that will be covered by presentations this year include the Blue Marine Foundation work with fishermen in Lyme Bay, offshore aquaculture, the new role of the IFCAs, protected name status for shellfish (PGI, PGO), the Chinese Mitten Crab and the analysis of shellfish stock assessments.
The Association’s talks with various government bodies including Marine Protected Areas, crab management, the status of gigas oysters and the classification of shellfish harvesting waters will also be discussed.
The keynote speech is expected to be given by European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki.
