Norway has set a new record for seafood exports, increasing the value by 29% to €10.45 billion compared to the same period last year.

In the third quarter of 2022, the country enjoyed its best quarter to date with exports worth €3.74 billion. September itself was the strongest single month ever for Norwegian seafood exports, with an export value of €1.45 billion, an increase of 27% compared to September last year. The previous record for a single month was March this year.

“The growth in value for Norwegian seafood exports has been impressive this year, and in September, we passed the NOK 100 billion mark,” said Christian Chramer, chief executive of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The increases are mainly as a result of historically high prices globally and are boosting Norway’s plans for export growth. “The government has set a target of at least a 50 per cent increase in Norwegian exports, excluding oil and gas, by 2030,” said Bjørnar Skjæran, Fisheries and Oceans Minister.

“This year’s export figures show that the seafood industry will be an important contributor to achieving this target,” he added.

Salmon remains the biggest export, accounting for 72% of value and 49% of total export volume in the third quarter. Value increased 30% compared to last year to €620 million.
