Scottish fish and chip shops were winners at this year’s ‘Seafish Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Awards’ walking away with multiple awards owing to the popularity of fresh Scottish haddock.

The Bay Fish and Chip Shop in Stonehaven won ‘Independent Takeaway Fish & Chip Shop of the Year’ and the ‘Good Catch Award’, while Frankies Fish & Chips in Shetland walked away with the ‘From Field to Fryer Award’, ‘Young Fish Fryer of the Year Award’ and the ‘Amanda Seafoods Challenge Award’.
Both shops serve a range of other species such as hake, pollock and coley, and make an effort to encourage customers to try alternative local species.
Callum Richardson, owner of Bay Fish and Chip Shop, said: “Haddock is our best seller. We buy fresh from Peterhead and promote the low food miles and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainable credentials to our customers, who really appreciate the fact that we are supporting the local industry. I would encourage chippies everywhere to seek fresh Scottish supply and to do their bit to help.”
The awards recognise emerging talent and reward the contribution that many fish and chip businesses have made to their local communities and what they contribute to the wider UK seafood industry.
Scottish haddock gained MSC certification in 2010. All Scottish stocks are caught within agreed quotas and are fished in a responsible manner.
