The Primefish project, led by MATIS, has received €5m in funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme to help improve the competitiveness of the European fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

The project’s consortium will work closely with over forty representatives’ organisations from the fisheries and aquaculture sector to include producers, processors and consumers.

Guðmundur Stefánsson, the Primefish coordinator, said that although there are some excellent companies and producers in the European fisheries and aquaculture sectors, they are not always well connected with the markets and consumers, so the project will help with this.

One of the project’s main outcomes will be a decision support framework which will be used in improving decision making, production planning and launching of new products, as well as spotting possible “boom and bust” price cycles.

Mr Stefánsson said: “This is a very ambitious goal of the project. One of the most important outputs of Primefish will be giving to stakeholders predicting capacity and early warnings to reduce these cycles. If we are able to manage them adequately, we will contribute to increase the stability in the market.”

The project will also seek to tackle the issue of enhancing local production for local consumption and it will attempt to provide companies with the necessary tools for positioning themselves in the market using traceability and certification schemes.
