Finning Power Systems has won the contract to supply the complete power and propulsion system for the new 71-metre super-trawler MFV “Serene”.

Vessel owners, the Serene Fishing Company Limited placed the order at last year’s Fishing Show following Finning’s successful commissioning of a similar power system for the “Charisma” trawler based at Whalsay Island.
The contract includes the supply of the main MaK 12 M32C 6,000kW engine and a Scana Volda propulsion system including gearbox, shaft line, propeller and nozzle. Two MaK M20C generator sets will supply the vessel’s auxiliary power and two CAT harbour sets will provide an emergency supply of electricity when the vessel is in port.
A smaller CAT engine will provide backup power for the lights and heaters and will use the main MaK engine as its cooling source.
Norwegian consultant Vik-Sandvik’s innovative vessel design includes an enclosed desk and accommodation for 15 people. The hull is being built in Turkey and is due for completion in the middle of 2008 after which time it will be fitted out at West Contractors’ shipyard in Norway.
The testing of the engines has been completed. The power system will provide a cruising speed of 17 knots and a trawling speed of 5.5 knots.
It is expected that the vessel will carry up to 2,000 tonnes of fish including herring, mackerel and blue whiting which will be processed at Lerwick before export to the Far East and Africa.
